A woman named Marnie decided to relate a bizarre and disturbing experience that she had when was five years old to the paranormal investigator and host of the ‘Darkness Radio’ podcast Dave Schrader.
The Incident[]
Marnie was sleeping in a double bed with her brother, who was three at the time, when it happened. She was having trouble sleeping, and was rolling around as her parents audibly watched the 10 o’clock evening news downstairs. She kept rolling back and forth until she suddenly saw a clown standing beside her bed. He was staring down at her and she could hear him breathing. It made no other noises, but did blink and so it didn’t appear to be a statue or anything like that. It was wearing a purple and green outfit with a red tie, which was clarified to not be bloody when Dave asked about it. Dave also asked if the clown was ‘happy-looking’, to which Marnie clarified that he was instead maniacal and scary.
Marnie lay awake for so long that when the furnace in her room turned on, she could hear the cheap satin rustling on the clown’s outfit, which was very close to the furnace. She was afraid to move, and she could hear the ‘Johnny Carson music’ (presumably the theme on the Tonight Show) coming from downstairs - meaning that her parents’ television show had finished. They started to turn down the lights, and it was clear that they were getting ready to go to bed. Marnie was so frightened that she couldn’t scream out for them, and instead moved her arm underneath the cover to pinch her brother ‘in the soft part of the arm’ to try and wake him up. He didn’t wake up, and simply pulled away from her. Marnie kept opening and closing her eyes, hoping that the next time she opened them the clown would be gone. That wasn’t forthcoming.
‘It seemed to me that it went on for hours. And then I think I just really fell asleep out of pure exhaustion and terror.’
The next morning, she woke up and told her parents about her harrowing experience, but they inevitably didn’t believe her and came to the conclusion that she must have been dreaming. However, her brother had a bruise where she had pinched him during the night. She never saw the clown leave, and she thinks that she must have literally passed out while she was doing the thing where she opened and closed her eyes repeatedly. The same thing has never happened again, but the experience has stuck with Marnie ever since.
‘I stared for so long I would know the stupid clown again if I saw it but I’ve never seen anything exactly like that.’
